We talked about looking at relative frequencies and also simple frequencies across different variables and looking for an association, but wouldn’t you need an actual statistical test before claiming that they’re dependent?
If we were going to make a claim about the population from which the sample came, yes, we’d need a test. But to answer if the variables are associated/independent in just the sample, we can compare the relative frequencies and call it a day.
