I have been told that a strategy based thesis is more sophisticated than a device based thesis. What is your advice? Would it be ok to only talk about the strategies in my thesis (like shifts and appeals) or would it be better to talk about the devices (like repetition and imagery)?
It’s not a hard-and-fast rule, but that is generally true. The more you can focus on the most impactful writing choices and get away from a “identifying devices mentality,” the stronger your essay will be.
