East India Company

Can someone explain the importance/relevancy, and cause, and effects for EIC?

Dutch? British? It’s important to be specific. That aside, the various East India Companies were government-endorsed joint-stock companies that made a RIDICULOUS amount of money for country and crown, and for themselves, and as the crown’s emissaries in India, also acted on the Crown’s behalf. They had private armies at their disposal and often kept the law in on the continent for the Crown in question. They were, among other things, the Crown’s enforcement for their interests from afar, and were used to keep the peace, keep colonials down, and profits up. As they were private entities, they also saved the government money since they provided their own armies.

Kind of a big deal, y’know?
