Lac operon

Can you repeat the steps in gene regulation for the lac operon?

The lac operon is an inducible operon, meaning that it is off by default but can be turned on. When lactose is present in the environment of the bacterium, an inducer binds to the repressor molecule attached to the operon, making it inactive. This enables RNA Polymerase to access the operon, transcribing its genes, which code for enzymes needed to break down lactose.
