Can someone explain what an R-group for proteins is? Thanks

Yes. Proteins all are made up of different atoms correct? A protein has a central carbon attached to 4 things

  1. Amine Group
  2. Hydrogen
  3. Carboxyl
  4. R Group

R Group is sort of the “identity” of the protein. All proteins have identical parts but they are differentiated by their R-groups. A lot of times the properties of the proteins are determined by the R-group.

Thank you.
