Random selection involves how a sample group is chosen from a population (members of the population all have an equal likelihood of being selected), whereas random assignment involves how participants in a study are placed into either the control or experimental group. In random assignment, members of the sample are assigned to either control or experimental group without their knowledge (single blind), or without their or the researcher knowing what group they are in (double-blind).
