Sensation and Perception

What is the difference between bottom up and top down processing?

With bottom-up processing, one notices the parts before perceiving the whole. A trumpet player may notice the trumpet playing in a band first, and then perceiving the entire band’s performance. Top-down processing is perceiving something in its entirety before noticing its parts, or details about it. You recognize a friend at a glance, but then notice that they’ve just gotten a new ring.
