Are the signaling molecules transcribed from specific genes to produce a response? Where do they come from?
Good question! Some signaling molecules are proteins, and some are hydrocarbons (ex. hormones made in glands by endocrine cells). Their production is definitely beyond the scope of the AP exam, but I would think that DNA in those endocrine cells would make proteins that gather the necessary materials and piece together the signaling molecule.
