The "Why" part of commentary and analysis

What does that mean? May I have an example?

Why is your explanation and commentary. How is going to be the device. So if a speaker is trying to make a point, you have HOW they did so (device), and WHY they chose that device. Essentially this is WHY does that device work for that particular audience.

Hey there!

In the crams, we have been looking at the commentary and analysis as a three-step process:
1 - WHAT - give what is happening by description or name (if you know it) and include text evidence to prove it is there.
2 - WHY - tell why the author has used it, linking to the message he/she is attempting; this lets you show understanding of the rhetorical situation in terms of the speaker to message
3 - HOW - explains how it functions in terms of audience reaction and audience movement and links to the purpose; this lets you show understanding of the rhetorical situation in terms of audience and context.
