Do we have to have a counterclaim in our thesis?
No, but including a counterclaim will set you up nicely for getting the complexity point later in your DBQ.

It’s not necessary. Make a “historically defensible claim” – present your argument. Was x better than y? Did a have a longer lasting impact on society than b?
