What is the difference between schemas and chunking? are they the same or different?
Schemas are mental maps or templates. You have a schema for what a party is like, a mental map of your school campus (even if you haven’t seen it for awhile).
Chunking is the literal act of breaking a large piece of information up to make it easier to remember. Telephone numbers were chunked area code-exchange- number (although no one needs that anymore). Memory experts who train people to go to high-stakes competitions teach them to “chunk” what they are trying to learn (break a shuffled deck of cards into groups of 3, for example, and learn each trio, usually with a story about them, which is elaborative rehearsal.).
