The 18th Amendment to the Constitution was largely pushed by Women’s Temperance Societies. They believed that alcohol was destroying homes by men being out drinking and carousing and the abuse that often followed these episodes. It was their belief that through “temperance,” i.e., not drinking, homes would be improved upon, and life would be better for women and children.
