Wording/Description of the Experimental Design

If the experiment said X is substituted for Y, does that mean that X is now in place of Y, or the other way around?

For example “phenylalanine is substituted for a leucine at amino acid position 1014.”

I’m just a little confused on the language of it

That example means that there is supposed to be phenyl at 104, but now there is leucine
